Hi, I’m Karen,

Welcome to The Words We Carry where I write about language — the sentences we inherit, the stories we tell ourselves, the words that build us up or quietly break us down. I write about books and beauty, midlife and meaning, and that strange magic of putting pen to paper. Everything is backed by science, but based in story - because I believe in a well-storied life.

I believe:

Words matter - in a rewires-your-brain, changes-your-life way.

The sentences we carry shape everything. How we see ourselves. What we think we deserve. Whether we move forward or stay stuck.

I’m a speech-language pathologist. I’ve studied language, cognition, the speech and the science and the soul of it. And I have seen how amazing the brain can be - like forming new neural pathways to compensate for injury or disease.

I’m a book coach. I believe we get to edit our stories - the ones we think, dream, write and live. Here, we get to cross out the sentences that don’t serve us and write better ones.

I’m a certified journaling coach, but this isn’t about journaling your feelings or venting on the page. The prompts you’ll receive here, they’re backed by research. Questions that seem simple, are asking you to use different parts of your brain.

It’s about treating your language like the tool it is.

I host a book club. The Midlife Lit Lounge.

I teach workshops. The Analog School (Spring 2026) where I will teach you the tools and techniques of HOW to journal for yourself and your business.

And two mornings a week, I work on my novel - because I’m not just teaching this.

I’m living it.

Grab a pen. Pull up a chair. I’ll get the paper.

Subscribers:

Receive weekly essays on language how it shapes us, traps us, and sets us free.

Each month will have a theme/word and we will analyze this through the lens of language in self, science, story and style. I’ll be loading my tote with podcasts, research, interviews, book recommendations and of course, journaling prompts that actually do something.

You’ll even catch the occasional glimpse behind-the-scenes of a writer building her life one sentence at a time.

Paid subscribers will have access to the Midlife Lit Lounge - a quarterly book club and the deeper work of story and language analysis of stories with midlife characters and themes.

My Story

During perimenopause, I discovered a benign lump in my leg. The surgery left me with chronic nerve pain and forced me to rebuild everything - including how I talked to myself.

Through journaling, I tracked patterns and identified the language that had kept me and my story stuck. I turned this transformation into a teachable skill.
